Web Development employee rules

Company or employee rules

Companies have many rules such as coding standards, deadlines, working hours, how we should treat others and many more. The difference between each company is that some have very strict standards whilst others are more lenient. I've worked at many companies ranging from being extremely strict including exactly how my desk should look, what I should wear and how I should lay out all my code to companies with no coding standards and wearing casual clothes.

In each company that I worked for I never found any of these rules helped to make websites better. I found that creating websites is mainly due to each employee and their attitude to their work. No matter how many rules you make, your websites will only be as good as your employees can make them.

list of superficial rules not stating anythingCreating websites is an art form, it takes years to become good at it and when you do get good at certain aspects of creating the website, new standards and systems arise which forces you to learn more. It is a never ending learning experience to which you will never be ahead of everyone else. What you need to do is continually learn and grow as a developer.

Companies who define rules do not take this into account and believe by defining some strict standards, the employees will magically become good web developers. This is incorrect and the standards of these companies are no better than others. What a company needs to do is solely focus on employees and encourage them to learn and read. If a company contains great web developers because they hired people with the right attitude, your websites will be better than companies with many rules.

Praising, encouraging and listening to your employees has a greater impact on the quality of your websites than any superficial rules will ever.
