Logo as home link
Web conventions are very important for consistency and ease of use of your website and one important convention is that your logo should link back to your home page.
Users spend most of their time at other websites and learn how to use websites from an overall experience of using the web. Therefore if you try to create a site that is a lot different from other websites, there is a very good chance your users will have trouble using it.
One convention that is very common is using the logo as a link back to the home page. This is a technique that should be used for all websites that have a logo. By following this convention users will find your site a little easier to use. If you fail to add this link a user may actually believe your logo is broken after clicking on it.
This also begs the question of whether it is a good idea to add a home link on your main navigation. This question is hard to answer and should be done on a site by site basis and should be based on many things. These include how prominent is your logo? do your users regularly go back to the home page? how much real estate do you have for an extra menu item? does your client want a home link button?
Just remember that the convention of the world wide web is have a link back to your home page from the logo of your website. Therefore you logo should link back to your home page.
